How to identify
- Reddish-brown insects with forceps-like cerci at the rear
- Hide under boards, mulch, and pots by day
- Ragged chewing on tender growth overnight
Damage: Chewed seedlings and flower petals; sometimes helpful as predators too.
Control methods
- Roll newspaper or use oil traps overnight and empty in the morning.
- Reduce dense mulch against seedling stems if damage is severe.
- Tolerate low numbers — earwigs also eat aphids and soft insects.
