How to identify
- Pinhead-sized dark beetles that jump when disturbed
- Many small round holes in leaves (shotgun damage)
- Worst on seedlings and first true leaves
Damage: Stunted seedlings; heavy damage can kill young plants.
Control methods
- Floating row cover from day of transplant or sowing.
- Keep beds moist and growing fast — stressed seedlings suffer more.
- Yellow sticky cards for monitoring only.
What products to use
We list product types and what to check on the label — not brand rankings, prices, or “we tested” claims. Always follow the label for your crop, and prefer the least disruptive option that works.
Spinosad or pyrethrin (labeled)
When: Severe seedling damage when covers are not possible
Look for: Vegetable label; evening spray; do not treat blooming plants bees are visiting
