Grasshoppers

Jumping insects that chew leaves and fruit, especially in hot, dry summers.

Crops often hit: Beans, Corn, Greens, Most vegetables

How to identify

  • Large jumping insects with powerful hind legs
  • Chewed leaf margins and ragged holes
  • Often move in from grassy field edges

Damage: Defoliation and fruit scarring during outbreaks.

Control methods

  1. Mow tall grass near beds before peak summer.
  2. Row cover on high-value plantings during outbreaks.
  3. Hand-catch in the cool morning on small gardens.
